This website is initiated by the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations.
The working group was established by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights in 2009. The African Commission on human and Peoples' Rights can be considered as the 'judicial wing' of the African Union: mandated to promote and protect the rights guaranteed in the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. To fulfil its mandate it uses 'special mechanisms', for example Special Rapporteurs; Working Groups and special committees. The African Commission created this working group to:
- Understand the umpact of the Extractive Industry (mining, oil and gas, fishing and other resources) on the Environment and Human Rights violations in Africa
- Provide the ACPHR with pertinent information to improve the Extractive Industry in Africa
If you know a community whose rights protected by the African Charter (see documents) are violated, write to the Working Group and let them know. If you have any other information to share, please do so too.
